preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education.
Established in 1766, the university is the eighth oldest higher
education institution in the United States. More than 69,000
students and 22,500 full- and part-time faculty and staff learn,
work, and serve the public at Rutgers locations across New Jersey
and around the world. The School of Communication and Information
(SC&I) on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus houses a dynamic
community of scholars who conduct engaged research and teach in the
areas of communication, information science and information
technology, journalism, librarianship, media studies,
organizational and health communication, public relations, and
other professional practice areas. SC&I has about 2,500
enrolled students and teaches thousands of other Rutgers students
in our five undergraduate programs, two masters degrees, an
interdisciplinary doctoral program, and non-degree continuing
education programs. We value our culture of collegiality and work
hard to support the success of our full- and part-time faculty,

dedicated to advancing knowledge about communication and its
practice in society. The department examines how meaning is created
and negotiated in human interaction to address the personal,
professional, and public communication challenges and opportunities
posed by 21st century life. Our students become leaders in private,
public and civil sectors by developing a deep and practical
appreciation of how communication shapes the world in which we
live. Research from SC&I’s renowned faculty experts examines
the complexity of communication processes related to five focal
areas: communication and technology, health communication,
interpersonal communication, language and social interaction, and
organizational communication. SC&I’s students may also acquire
knowledge and skills allowing them to pursue careers related to
strategic communication and public relations, leadership, health
and wellness, relational and family communication, and a range of
other options. The Department of Journalism and Media Studies ( JMS
) helps students learn the craft of finding and reporting the news,
as well as making other types of media, using cutting-edge tools
and technology. The department’s courses also aid students in
learning to evaluate and understand the wide variety of media forms
that permeate their lives. Students gain a grounding in the
history, ethics and values of journalism that can prepare them to
be media producers during an exciting time of innovation while
learning to analyze media systems and power in ways that help them
become better-equipped citizens and community members.
